Always proud to call San Antonio their home, our friends at Ranger Creek Brewing asked us to help them design a can to celebrate the vibrant culture of the Alamo City. Unlike their initial beer offerings – IPAs, hefeweizens and stouts aimed toward the beer aficionado – they shifted their strategy to create a drinkable, everyday lager that everyone in San Antonio could enjoy.
Looking to connect with the heritage of the city through our designs, we took the quatrefoil shape from the ubiquitous colonial Spanish architecture in San Antonio, turning it 45 degrees to make it unique to Ranger Creek. The red color filling the quatrefoil is a nod to the city’s rich beer history with the Pearl brewery, and the blue and yellow colors are a hat tip to the old San Antonio Spurs color scheme. A piece of custom type with a friendly flourish and this bright, fiesta-like color palette were all the can needed to become a bullseye on the shelves. In fact, an early test at H-E-B was so successful that the chain ordered more, and the beer was on its way to becoming Ranger Creek’s flagship beer, amounting to over 50% of its beer sales.
Piggybacking on the success of the beer, we helped Ranger Creek roll out seasonal Hatch and Salt & Lime variations of the lager in colorful and creative designs, giving proud San Antonians even more opportunities to toast their beloved hometown.
In 2010, the folks at Ranger Creek debuted Texas’ first “brewstillery” – a combined brewery & distillery proudly located in San Antonio. Committed to using local ingredients and nontraditional recipes to craft unique products, one handmade batch at a time, they’d quickly grown into one of the state’s most respected teams of brewers and distillers.
